The win on Saturday brought the Stars level with Esi Loan University on 24 points, but it was goal difference that helped Uni grab fourth spot and progress into the playoffs. Uni themselves had fought hard for a crucial 2-2 draw against Gigira Laitepo Morobe FC in Lae.
Stars became their own worst enemies after starting the season in indifferent form and taking time to hit their straps. It was in the second round that they found consistency but it was too little too late.
CMSS Tigers were the surprise bolters into the playoffs despite having a bye over the long Easter Weekend.
The Tigers were helped by five consecutive draws from round seven through to round 12.
In other action, Tukoko Unitech thrashed Gelle Hills 3-0, while in the second double header in Port Moresby league champions Hekari United FC cemented their dominance over Niu Petro Madang Fox with the 3-1 thrashing of the Mamose boys.
The finals this weekend will be between Hekari and Esi Loan Uni, while CMSS Tigers take on Gigira Laitepo Morobe. Both matches are scheduled to take place in Port Moresby.
Meanwhile, NSL champions Hekari continue to prepare for their O-League first leg final against Waitakare United which will kickoff at the Port Moresby Rugby League Stadium on Saturday 17 April, with the second leg to follow in New Zealand on Sunday 2 May.
