FIFA has announced the 21 referees, 42 assistant referees as well as six support referees from 35 different countries, with a trio led by New Zealand’s Matthew Conger making the cut alongside support referee Nick Waldron, also from New Zealand.
Experienced assistant referee Tevita Makasini of Tonga will be joined by Simon Lount of New Zealand to round out Conger’s trio.
Waldron, who will officiate during this month’s OFC Champions League in Fiji, says 2015 is a big year and the U-20 World Cup is just one of the highlights.
“It’s basically a year-round process for us now. We’re coming towards the end of the A-League and the ASB Premiership and then we’re moving into the OFC Champions League and I’ve also been fortunate to have been appointed as a support referee to the U-20 World Cup in New Zealand so that’s a great honour.
“The second half of 2015 it just continues; there is the South Pacific Games in Papua New Guinea so there is potential to be attending that and ultimately it would be great to get to the U-17 World Cup in Chile – that’s what on the horizon this year.”
The FIFA U-20 World Cup New Zealand 2015 will be played from 30 May – 20 June in the cities of Auckland, Christchurch, Dunedin, Hamilton, New Plymouth, Wellington and Whangarei.
The Final will be played on 20 June in the North Harbour Stadium in Auckland.
