The girls triumphed against Lock Haven University yesterday, in a close battle ending with a 2-1 result.
Although Ramona Padio secured the win for the team by scoring both goals, the match truly was a team effort with all 21 field players participating in the game, allowing every team member to showcase their skills in front of PNG coach Lisa Cole before final team selection.
“This was an important game as we were able to see everyone in the game and get the result”, Cole said.
The squad’s first scheduled match was against Seattle Pacific University on 15 August but Papua New Guinea were unable to dominate the strong university side.
The team hopes to continue a winning streak for the remaining five scheduled matches as part of their United States tour, but development and preparation before the World Cup is the top priority.
Between the team’s trainings and matches, they have filled spare time by gaining inspiration from other football teams including Seattle Sounders FC at CenturyLink field, an experience Cole described as an amazing opportunity for the PNG team.
