Last season Auckland City FC were knocked out 2-1 by eventual runners-up Raja Casablanca in heartbreaking circumstances at the playoff stage.
Coach Ramon Tribulietx has already started his analysis of the Moroccan champions but said there was more work ahead for him and his technical staff.
“We will be analysing Moghreb with more detail very soon. Moghreb are a very skilful side, very similar to Raja Casablanca, with good skill – fast might be a good definition of their qualities.
“They have also strengthened their squad with a few signings like Iajour, who scored the first goal against us for Casablanca last year. They also have some very talented players like Naim. They are overall a very good side on the ball and will definitely be a big challenge for us,” he said.
If the Kiwi champions can overcome Moghreb Tetouan, they will face either AS Vita of the Congo or ES Setif of Algeria in the quarter-finals.
Two miracle results for the Aucklanders would then set up a dream semi-final with Argentina’s San Lorenzo, who Tribulietx says, alongside Real Madrid, are the obvious favourites.
“Last year is a great example on how hard it is to predict things in the Club World Cup. Initially you would think that Real Madrid and San Lorenzo are favourites to be in the final, but at this time of the year the form of the teams will also play an important part in the outcome.
“Our preparatory camp was also good and we played Espanyol and we are close to finalising our plans for this campaign and will be based in Dubai ahead of the Moghreb Tetouan match,” he said.
Five clubs have so far qualified for this year’s edition of the Club World Cup: Moroccan champions Moghreb Tetouan, Real Madrid (UEFA), Auckland City (OFC), San Lorenzo (CONMEBOL) and Cruz Azul (CONCACAF).
Two more teams are still to be determined: the champions of Africa, who will be crowned on November 2nd, and the champions of Asia, who will seal their place on November 1st.
