Wellington’s Waterside Karori have already wrapped up Central League honours and are now eyeing a domestic double but must get past a Coastal Spirit side who are also still in contention for a two-trophy season.
Neither side had previously reached the semi-final stage and the Wellingtonians can now make another breakthrough – a win would end a seven-year semi-final losing streak for teams from the capital.
Eastern Suburbs and Glenfield Rovers have each reached the final before but both sides tasted defeat in their only appearance – Suburbs in 2005 and Rovers two years later.
The two sides have been drawn together at Suburbs’ Madills Farm in an intriguing Auckland derby that could yet be a key match in setting up a domestic league-cup double.
Glenfield have all but wrapped up the Northern League with a five-point lead and two games to play while Suburbs are the only team that, mathematically, can still catch them.
