The Cook Islands Creative Centre is a non-government organisation providing support to members, who all have physical or mental disabilities, which allows them to come together five days a week.
The centre dedicates every Thursday afternoon to getting active and playing sports, and last Thursday’s attendees were fortunate to have the run of the CIFA complex for their first foray with the round ball.
Creative Centre staff Ma Dwane and Mata Ngamata brought 10 members along for a kick-around on the small field set up by CIFA development officer Tuka Tisam.
Ngamata says the staff are constantly looking for sporting activities they can do with their members and although some of them are unable to participate and kick a football, they were just as excited about relaxing under the coconut trees to watch their peers.
“Surprisingly, this is the first time any of these members have ever kicked a football so it is great to come to the CIFA complex, and the look on their faces say it all – this is fun,” Ngamata says.
“We try to keep our members active and football is most likely one of their favourite activities. We will certainly return, and possibly with more members, to enjoy more football-based activities.”
