The festival, which mixes a strong social message with football and sports activities, has taken off at the Tuanimoto Complex and thanks to strong participation Football Federation Samoa has been able to branch out to Savai’i.
Women and girls of all ages were invited to attend the special day dedicated to empowering women and promoting gender equality.
The day was opened with a prayer conducted by Reverend Viliamu Falevaai of the Siufaga CCCIS followed by a keynote address from FFS executive committee member and strong advocate for women’s rights, Emily Young.
“Soccer is like a poem that you say with your heart and soul, by using your feet,” Young opened.
“When you’re on the field, remember Soccer Sisters as your family. You are in a secure environment where there is only peace and happiness.”
Providing a safe environment for girls to get active and healthy, Soccer Sisters soon saw the formalities make way for the fun with small sided games, fun activities, ZOVA for mothers and prize giveaways for all those involved.
The festival is supported by the FIFA Women’s Development Programme and OFC and has helped establish a girl’s football league whcih is now in its second season.
