The striker is now based in New Zealand and plays for Central League club Wairarapa United, whom he has helped put together an impressive run all the way to the ASB Chatham Cup final.
Wairarapa will face Napier City Rovers in that match on August 28 and largely have Soromon to thank for securing their place in the most prestigious club game in New Zealand football.
The 27-year-old scored the only goal as Wairarapa upset favourites Bay Olympic 1-0 away in the semi-final and, despite taking place hundreds of kilometres away, his feats have not gone unnoticed back home.
“I am a proud father at the moment,” says dad Pako Soromon, who still lives in the Vanuatu capital of Port Vila and works for the DHL shipping company.
“My son Seule has brought happiness to our family since he left Vanuatu a few years ago and we were very happy to hear he had scored the only goal in the semi-final. We wish him and his team the best of luck in the final.”
The match-winning strike arrived at Auckland’s Olympic Park when Wairarapa captain Adam Cowan picked out Soromon’s run with a pinpoint through ball two minutes into the second half and the former Tupuji Imere star lobbed oncoming goalkeeper Danny Robinson.
Soromon is not the only player from the Pacific Islands in the cosmopolitan Wairarapa squad and the celebrations after making the final had a distinctly Oceanic flavour.
Former Vanuatu international Soromon is joined in the line-up by Fijian stars Peter Rabo and Waisaki Sabatu, who made sure the trip home would be a memorable one.
“We’ve got a 20-litre Powerade container and Pita Rabo has emptied it out and it’s chocker full of kava,” coach Phil Keinzley said after the match.
Soromon, who is also a key figure for YoungHeart Manawatu in the ASB Premiership national league, has made a handful of appearances for Vanuatu since debuting in an August 2007 World Cup qualification match against Samoa and scored four goals in his second international against American Samoa.
In the 2009-10 season, he formed a unique all-South Pacific strikeforce at Manawatu with Samoa international Desmond Fa’aiuaso.
Despite scoring eight times for his country, he has not been included in the Vanuatu squad for the Pacific Games, which take place in New Caledonia from August 27 to September 9.
