But fellow All White Tommy Smith helped put an end to his national team mate’s celebrations when his side handed Millwall their first defeat in 14 games.
The 3-0 loss ended an unbeaten run stretching back to September for Wood’s team and, despite the on-form striker slotting a pass from Shane Lowry into the back of the net just four minutes into the match, the goal was disallowed after he was ruled offside.
Not much later, defender Smith went close to opening the scoring for his side after connecting with an Aaron Cresswell free kick, only to head it just over the goal.
Wood then had another opportunity to break the deadlock in the 20th minute, but was left rueing his missed chance after heading over from five yards out.
Ipswich finally opened the scoring 37 minutes in when DJ Campbell connected with a Cresswell cross. The victors then struck twice again after the break.
Millwall coach Kenny Jackett says his side struggled to control Ipswich’s attack and weren’t helped when their own normally ruthless forwards failed to fire.
“Chris Wood’s goal in the first half looked bang onside, so we could have been 1-0 up,” Jackett says.
“Ipswich played with good intensity today and in the first half the game could have gone either way but they got the edge.”
