OFC U-19 Women’s Championship 2002
The inaugural OFC U-19 Women’s Championship was held in 2002 and was the first age-group women’s event established by OFC.
The tournament also doubled as qualification for the first FIFA U-19 Women’s World Championship™ in 2002 held in Canada.
It was hosted by Tonga and contested between seven nations. Two goals each from Caitlin Munoz and Emma Davison helped Australia claim the inaugural OFC U-19 Women’s Championship title with a big 6-0 victory over Trans-Tasman rivals New Zealand in the final in Nuku’alofa.
Australia became the first nation to represent OFC at the FIFA U-19 Women’s World Cup™, qualifying for the finals in Canada in 2002 as continental champions. They opened with a 5-1 victory over Chinese Taipei, before securing progress to the knockout stages after a draw with England. Their campaign came to an end at the quarter-final stage though, dramatically losing 4-3 to Brazil after extra-time.
