The pacesetters hoped to extend their impressive run when they met Rewa in the National Football League at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori. But Rewa had clearly not read the script and posted a surprise 1-0 win in front of a healthy crowd.
The day’s hero was the inspirational Marika Rodu, who tucked a penalty away in the 22nd minute. The spot kick had been awarded after Lautoka sweeper Krishna Sami was adjudged to have fouled Rewa’s James Naka in the box.
The goal gave Rewa a boost of confidence and they seemed to begin to believe they could cause a major upset. Tensions grew as six players were cautioned and two sent off – Rewa’s Naka (78th minute) and striker Veresa Toma (88th minute).
Lautoka flooded forward to find the equaliser that would keep their unbeaten streak going but, despite boosting the likes of top district reps Sami, Osea Vakatalesau, Shamil Rao, Alvin Avinesh and Marika Madigi, could not find a way through the stubborn Rewa defence.
In action from the other games, Suva beat Nadroga 1-0 with a Joseph Nimariau strike, while Tavua disposed of Nadi 2-1 thanks to a Amit Kumar double. Ratu Josevata Dugacagi notched a penalty for the beaten side.
Vatukaoula defeated Rakiraki by the same scoreline with Manasa Leva and Maikeli Sivo scoring for the winners, and Peni Ketewai netting for Rakiraki.
The U-20 national team also posted a win, 4-1 over Nasinu. Misaele Draunibaka, Taione Kerenavanua, Noa Vukica and Joshua Tawake all got on the scoresheet, while Vikash Reddy grabbed a consolation.
