Maltock’s statement came during the opening ceremony of the week long FIFA Youth Coaching Course at Teouma Academy on Monday, led by OFC player development officer Daniel Shirley.
“We must follow the example of Tahitian Football,” Maltock said. “They have been working hard for the past ten years coaching kid’s football and today we can see that result.
“I know that all coaches coming today have been in the field teaching football and I encourage you to please continue to do good work for Vanuatu football. I want to remind you that the future of Vanuatu football is our children.”
VFF Development Centre and Centre of Excellence co-ordinator Moise Poida agreed with Maltock’s assessment of the future of the game in Vanuatu.
“We have many children in town and in the villages,” he said. “We must work together to achieve success in football and it is very important to start now with the children.
“As a former national player, I totally agree that the future of football in Vanuatu is children.”
Shirley said this course is designed to develop the coaching skills of those working with young children.
“Thank you all for coming, we will have more time to talk throughout the course, but for now I want to remind you all that we must know the children we are dealing with and at the same time, we must understand them.”
The FIFA Youth Coaching Course concludes at Teouma Academy on Friday, 22 November.
