A double for Papua New Guinea U-20 representative Papalau Awele in the first half gave the Lae-based academy side a two-goal advantage.
That lead was extended courtesy of a spectacular diving header from Alex Kamen five minutes from the break. Kamen connected with a low ball in front of the goal mouth to score an early contender for goal of the year.
Oro scored a consolation goal in the 88th minute as another former youth international Patrick Aisa used his quick feet and on-the-ball talent to whip around the defenders and score.
Brendan Ben scored Besta’s fourth moments from the final whistle as Oro’s failing fitness left them vulnerable at the back.
Besta coach Bob Morris says he was impressed by the performance of his side and their ability to secure a comprehensive victory so early in the season.
“It’s a relatively new team. The technical team is still working with the players to build strong combinations,” he says, adding that he expects the team to only improve as the season progresses.
In the earlier match defending champions Hekari United proved too strong for the Lae City Dwellers, earning a 3-0 victory in the much anticipated encounter.
It wasn’t the homecoming former Hekari duo Raymond Gunemba and Nigel Dabinyaba were hoping for as they left Hekari behind to rejoin the new Lae franchise.
Home fans were left reeling in the Sir Ignatius Kilage stands when Nicholas Muri opened the scoring just 14 minutes into the match. Former Besta PNG United striker Tommy Sammy was next on the board for Hekari before Muri collected his brace.
In the final match of the weekend newcomers Madang came from behind to hold Admirality to a 1-1 draw at Laiwaden Oval in Madang.
