The 33-year-old will assist Head of Competitions David Firisua with all matters relating to competitions and events as OFC activities continue to increase with various programmes both on and off the field.
Corbett has worked previously as an operations coordinator for Vector Arena and a development officer for Squash Auckland.
The new OFC role is not his first taste of life at a football organisation.
He worked in the operations and events department at now defunct A-League club the New Zealand Knights, where he was responsible for all match day-related activities and the team’s travel arrangements.
Corbett has been involved with football since the age of five and has filled a wide range of roles in that time, including playing, coaching, managing, volunteering and administrating.
He is an avid follower of the game and still plays at a reasonable level.
OFC General Secretary Tai Nicholas says Corbett will be a valuable addition to the team.
“Mike has a comprehensive understanding of football, as well as excellent organisational skills so we are delighted to have him on board,” Nicholas says.
“This is certainly a great period for football with the FIFA World Cup getting down to the business end and OFC regional events to look forward to. The competitions department has some exciting times ahead with the OFC Futsal Championship in August and the OFC Women’s Nations Cup in September and October. The 2011 O-League also promises to be another action-packed season,” he says.
“The number of teams in these tournaments has risen so Mike is signing up at the ideal time.”
Corbett is pleased to have joined OFC and can’t wait to get stuck into the role.
“I am excited by this opportunity and about getting the chance to grow the game throughout the Oceania region,” he says.
“We have a fantastic chance to capitalise on the success that Oceania has experienced over the past 12 months and take the game to the next level.”
