Delivered by All Whites goalkeeper coach Paul Gothard and Football Ferns goalkeeper coach Danny Robinson, the training day saw 18 ‘keeper coaches from up and down the country accredited to deliver the new Introduction to Goalkeeping Coaching Course.
The course introduces coaches to the technical fundamentals of goalkeeping and provides examples of games and activities that will develop goalkeeper technique while retaining an emphasis on fun and enjoyment.
The Introduction to Goalkeeping Coaching Course is the first course of a new Goalkeeper Coach Education Pathway with the Level 1 Goalkeeper Coach Award set to be piloted in March 2015.
New Zealand Football Grassroots development manager Owain Prosser says Sunday’s coach educator course was an important first step in the delivery of the Goalkeeping Coaching Pathway.
“It is an exciting time for goalkeeping in New Zealand – we now have a qualified team of coach educators to help develop goalkeeper coaches in all areas of the country,” Prosser said
“The Introduction to Goalkeeping Coaching Course is the first step on a brand new Goalkeeper Coach Education pathway, ensuring goalkeeper coaches of all abilities and experiences are supported in their coach development.
“Most importantly, the ones to benefit from the introduction of the new Goalkeeper Coach pathway and coaching courses are the players in that position.
“It is a specialist role within football and we are now able to begin to facilitate appropriate coaching for everyone who wants to follow in the footsteps of Glen Moss or Erin Nayler.”
