They weren’t the only side looking to start the season with a bang as AS Tefana, the 2014/15 league champions, securing a 4-0 opening victory over Aorai.
For Tefana coach Sebastien Labayen it was important to make a strong start, which his side managed to do to much to his relief.
“I was looking in particular at what they could produce on the field, it was consistent and they met the benchmarks we set as our players monopolised the ball.
“We knew we had to be effective in what we were doing, that we needed to put our opponents off and to be dangerous on attack,” he says.
Tefana were one of two Tahitian sides that took part in the 2015 Fiji Airways OFC Champions League, and Labayan says having a strong side for the 2016 edition is one of this season’s objectives.
“We want to be in the top four at the end of the first phase,” he explains.
“To go the furtherest possible in the Tahiti Cup, and from February we want to have a group of 24 players preparing for the Champions League.
“It’s a competition where different types of games from different cultures are present and we need to be performing at the highest level possible to be capable of adapting to those different systems.”
FTF have adopted a new system for the 2015/16 Ligue 1 season which will see it played out over four phases.
At the end of the first three phases, the top four sides will play off for a spot in the final to determine the winner of Ligue 1. The winner will also progress to the 2016 OFC Champions League.
