Since breaking into the premier ranks in 1990, it was Navua’s first final appearance in the IDC and the team held their nerve to win 2-0 win over Lautoka at the Vodafone Prince Charles Park in Nadi.
With two early goals from Alvin Avinesh and Shalesh Kumar, Navua then put in an impressive defensive effort to secure the victory. Lautoka had opportunities, including a penalty chance for Jone Vono Junior, but failed to capitalise.
It was an emotional moment for Navua Soccer Association President Anil Sharma who is stepping down from the position after last week being elected as one of Fiji FA’s Vice Presidents.
“During my term with Navua I have achieved what I wanted to do and now I will take all achievements to Fiji FA,” said Sharma.
“We have won the Fiji FACT and BOG titles but winning the IDC crown is the best feeling for me as it is the biggest and most prestigious tournament in Fiji.”
The Navua players will have a share of $50,000 for their historic win.
