Fernandes believes Papua New Guinea has a lot of potential in coaching which was evidenced by the group participating in the course.
The FIFA C Licence Coaching Course allowed the attendees to go more in-depth into the coaching process in regards to planning and delivering sessions around the principles of the game.
At the same time, the course addressed the development of a specific game model pertinent to each coach and focusing on the specificities of their environment and the needs of the players.
Fernandes says this also serves as a basis for the coach’s own evaluation process.
He says the most encouraging element he witnessed was each coach’s knowledge of their specific environment.
Papua New Guinea a multi-cultural nation with over 800 languages which makes it natural that there are different sets of norms and acceptable behaviour for each specific region.
Fernandes says what was encouraging was the coaches determination to continue adding to their knowledge base and improving their own skills.
Following the course he believes they can continue to grow if they place more emphasis on the planning and evaluation process which in turn should positively impact the training session delivery.
“Throughout the course we focused on shifting the coaches’ approach from delivering training sessions to actually developing a process in which they addressed specific player needs around the principles of the game in their own environment.
“I felt the coaches embraced the concept during the week, but the key is for them to continue to apply it in their environment which will impact their knowledge of the game, the players and themselves and therefor enhance their coaching delivery,” Fernandes explains.
“Most coaches have a philosophy in which they operate regardless of how simple it may be.
“It could be an instinctive habit or it may be an elaborate process, but by establishing a logical and practical coaching philosophy we can increase our football knowledge, improve our organisation skills and improve the communication process – all of which will lead us to building a positive team environment and improving individual and team performances.”
The FIFA Senior Coaching Course was held in Lae, Papua New Guinea from 8-13 September.
