Kombouaré made 106 appearances for PSG between 1990 and 1995 and returned to the club in 2009, spending three years at the helm, leading them to two consecutive Coupe de France finals.
After a brief stint in Saudi Arabia at the helm of Al-Hilal FC, Kombouaré signed with RC Lens on 18 June 2013. He led the club to second in Ligue 2 in his first season, earning promotion to the top flight where they currently sit 19th.
Despite how his relationship with the club ended, Kombouaré still has a soft spot for them.
“I spent 13 years at Paris Saint-Germain. I had the opportunity to occupy virtually every role and this club is engraved on me,” he says.
“When I am ousted from a club, it’s not a failure for me. It’s simply the trials of a man who goes from club to club. I will always be a supporter of PSG. I have so many friends there and I want them to win the Champions League and the title of French champions.
While his admiration for PSG will never wane, Kombouaré would be more than happy to see them lose at the weekend.
“If I can win the game on Saturday…that would be a great gift,” he says.
Kombouaré’s Lens plays PSG on Saturday 7 March at Parc des Princes in Paris at 5pm (local).

Avant son 8e de finale retour face à Chelsea la semaine prochaine, Paris affrontera le RC Lens, qui lutte pour le maintien, en championnat.
Une rencontre à part pour l’entraîneur des Sang et Or Antoine Kombouaré, qui a été démis de ses fonctions de patron du PSG pendant la trêve hivernale en 2011 alors que son équipe occupait la tête du classement.
“Ça va me faire quelque chose mais dans notre situation, ce qui m’importe le plus, c’est notre façon de jouer et de faire un bon match”, a confié l’ancien milieu de terrain parisien.
“J’ai passé treize ans au Paris SG. J’ai eu la chance de pouvoir y occuper pratiquement tous les postes. Ce club reste gravé ! Quand je suis évincé d’un club, ce n’est pas un échec pour moi. Ce sont des épreuves de la vie d’un homme qui passe dans des clubs.
“Je suis toujours autant supporter du PSG. J’ai beaucoup d’amis là-bas et je leur souhaite de gagner la Ligue des Champions et le titre de Champions de France. Mais par contre samedi, si je pouvais gagner le match… ils pourraient me faire un beau cadeau!”
